As the Hollywood blockbuster celebrates its first anniversary today, we look back at how the film is so relevant in the times of COVID-19 and possibly even how the “Mad Titan”
Thanos
was right – to some extent.
At a time when fans on social media celebrate one year of the film, their favourite characters, those epic scenes made for cinematic history and more, we turn the spotlight on one of the biggest and best villains we have seen so far in the 22
Marvel
movies spanning over 10 years.
What makes this ‘villainous’ character and his story -told through mere one line dialogues – so relevant today, is that it brings depth to this superhero movie. His addition to the narrative makes the story more complex, something that's more than just a battle of good-versus-evil, but a war of two distinctly different ideologies.
Without glorifying or idolising the villain here, this story gives us another perspective by having the bad guy explain why he did what he did. Although you'll disagree with Thanos’ reasoning, you can at least understand the motivations behind his actions. The strangest thing here is by passing off the circumstances that lead to his planet’s doom, is in a way failing to recognise our own lapses and faults in society that have now brought the world to a grinding halt and left the economy in shambles.
In the film ‘Avengers: Endgame’, although at first, the superheroes couldn’t accept the after-effects of Thanos’ snap, they realise its positive effects on the environment. “You know, I saw a pod of whales when I was coming up the bridge... There’s fewer ships, cleaner water,”
Captain America

.
While the heroes saw this change in about 5 years, we’re just a few weeks into the lockdown and the Himalayas are already visible from Punjab, the water quality of the Ganga has reportedly improved, the Yamuna is now foam-free, air-quality of metro cities around the world has improved greatly, marine life is recovering, migratory animal species are roaming freely, and a lot more
Be it life under lockdown or social distancing, the growing sense of hopelessness and despair at the rising death count, this supervillain seemed to have had the perfect reply to it all. As the environment now gets its chance to heals and the world learns to accept a "new normal", you can bet that there will be a new breed of superheroes – doctors and scientists – who will arise to save the day.
We will end this in the words of
Tony Stark
: “Everybody wants a happy ending, right? But it doesn't always roll that way. Maybe this time. I'm hoping if you play this back, it's in celebration. I hope families are reunited. I hope we get it back, in somewhat like a normal version of the planet has been restored, if there ever was such a thing.
